St. Edward's School: Being "Afro-Latino" in the Spanish Classroom during Black History Month

6

St. Edward's School issued the following announcement on March 31.

Sra. Amarilys Heard (lk)

Sra. Heard’s Spanish courses, Honors Spanish IV and AP Spanish Literature and Culture, celebrated Black History Month by learning about “Afro-Latinos” and the significance of being considered an Afro-Latino. Students read articles about the history of African heritage in Spanish communities focusing on the Afro-descendants of the Puerto Rican people. The honors course culminated the lesson by writing a cultural comparison on festivals that demonstrate the identity of its people (Mardi Gras vs. Fiestas de Santiago Apóstol, also known as Festival de Loiza). AP Spanish students compared various traditions and the significance and value of the African influence in arts, music and festivals. Throughout the unit, students engaged with new learning, and had fun making masks of the “vejigantes” in construction paper. To read more about the Festival de Loíza, click here.
