Instruments of Influence? Chinese Financing in South Asia

Through efforts like the Belt and Road Initiative, China finances an increasing number of development projects in South Asia. Some analysts view this venture as an opportunity for states to upgrade infrastructure, while others express caution, warning that these funds come with strings attached and may threaten states’ sovereignty.

In this virtual panel based on a series in South Asian Voices, Stimson’s online policy platform, contributors explore Sri Lankan, Nepalese, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani perspectives on Chinese financing, as well as its impact on the region as a whole.
